Thyroid and Metabolism Maxxing Guideβ
A clear guide on how the thyroid affects metabolism and what nutrients, supplements, and habits actually help support healthy thyroid hormone action.
What the Thyroid Doesβ
The thyroid is a small gland at the front of the neck that makes hormones that control the speed of your metabolism. These hormones tell your body how fast to use energy, how warm to stay, how hungry you feel, and how your organs function.
The thyroid makes two main hormones:
T4 β inactive form
T3 β active form that actually turns up metabolism
Your body makes most hormone as T4, then converts it to T3 in other tissues like the liver and kidneys.
BUT HOW DO WE MAX OUT TS? HERE IS HOW
Here are key nutrients that support thyroid hormone production and conversion:
IODINE
Iodine is required to make thyroid hormones. Low iodine reduces hormone production.
Iodine needs to be balanced: too much can interfere with thyroid function.
SELENIUM
Selenium is needed to convert T4 into T3, the active hormone. Without enough, T3 production drops.
ZINC
Zinc is involved in multiple steps of thyroid hormone production and use. It also helps hormone receptors work properly.
IRON AND VITAMIN A
Both iron and vitamin A influence thyroid hormone metabolism. Lack of iron can reduce T4 -> T3 conversion.
HABITS THAT HELP THYROID METABOLUSM:
Eat enough calories - chronic low calories can reduce thyroid output.
Eat enough protein - protein helps hormone action and muscle.
Strength training - builds muscle and increases resting metabolism.
Good sleep and low stress - stress hormones can reduce T4 -> T3 conversion. (I recommend Ashwaganda)
THINGS THAT CAN HARM THYROID FUNCTION:
Very low calorie diets
Excessive stimulants like caffeine
Long term nutrient deficiencies
Too much iodine beyond requirements
